A Game Store Built by Players, for Players
Hi, I’m Matt, owner of The Tactical Turtle in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Long before I owned a game store, I was a gamer.
I’ve been playing Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and tabletop RPGs since the early 1990s. Over the years I’ve built decks, painted miniatures, rolled countless dice, collected games, and spent more hours than I’d like to admit planning my next strategy.
Magic is still my favorite game, but I’ve always loved the entire tabletop hobby—from trading card games and RPGs to board games, miniatures, and wargaming.
That’s what inspired The Tactical Turtle.
We’re a locally owned, family-run game store serving Portsmouth, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and the Hampton Roads community. We carry Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece Card Game, Warhammer 40,000, Dungeons & Dragons, board games, RPGs, miniatures, dice, sleeves, deck boxes, and the tabletop supplies players need.
Most importantly, we’re players first.

The Tactical Turtle was built around a simple idea: gaming should be fun, and players shouldn’t have to overpay to enjoy their hobby.
Too often, products disappear because of scalpers, inflated prices, and artificial shortages. We believe great games belong in the hands of people who actually play them.
That’s why we work hard to offer competitive pricing and fair deals. We’d rather earn loyal customers than squeeze every dollar out of hard-to-find products.

Why “The Tactical Turtle”?
The name combines two things that mean a lot to me.
“Tactical” reflects my love of strategy games like Magic and Warhammer.
“Turtle” comes from my wife, who nicknamed me “Turtle” when we were dating because I always seemed to take forever getting on the road to visit her.
Together, the name perfectly represents both my personality and the hobby I’ve loved for decades.
Growing With the Community
We’re still a growing store, but our vision is bigger than retail. As we expand, we plan to add dedicated play space for Commander nights, prereleases, Warhammer games, D&D sessions, learn-to-play events, tournaments, and other community gatherings.
The goal isn’t simply to sell games.
It’s to build a place where local gamers can meet, play, and share the hobby together.
